Piper is a former Financial Times Group journalist, a lecturer at London Met University and an author. She came through our doors excited about expanding her Write Your Book courses to King’s Lynn, and since November that’s exactly what she’s been delivering at The Workshop. After the six‑week course wrapped up, we asked Piper and the students involved to share their experience.

Every Wednesday since November, Norfolk Writing School has been turning the lovely airy kitchenette at The Workshop into a writing space for our class, Write Your Book. Our course covers every aspect of how to write and publish a book, including how to get started on your book idea, whether it’s a novel or a non-fiction title, how to get in the author’s mindset and actually get the words down on paper or your laptop, plus how to edit your work and get it published.
We work in small, friendly groups and no prior writing experience is necessary – just an idea, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. I’m an author and writer myself, and I know from my own experience that writing can be a lonely business, which is why the right support and guidance can make such a difference.
It’s been really inspiring to work with our students on their ideas and see them progress. They are working on all kinds of exciting projects, from a romantic thriller set in Greece to short stories, a ‘sliding doors’ type memoir, crime fiction and local histories. We’ve also had some amazing discussions about writing techniques and our favourite books.
“I’m finding the course useful and informative and, hopefully, putting me on course to finish my novel with a view to publishing it,” says Bette, one of our students.
“I’ve found the course so valuable. I’ve really appreciated the chance to share and develop ideas. I have so many more techniques to tackle the blocks I was facing with my writing, and much more confidence,” says Claire, another one of our students.
The Workshop is a fantastic, supportive place – manager Megan has been brilliant. Our two writes also agree:

It’s been a joy having Piper and her students bring such energy, focus and imagination into our space each week. Courses like Write Your Book remind us why The Workshop exists – to give people a place to explore their creativity, meet others who share their passions, and discover just how much talent is thriving in our community.
